Early in his career, Handel worked with Corelli in Rome. His experiences in Italy deeply influenced the music Handel wrote for the rest of his life. A great violin virtuoso, Corelli published this set of sonatas on the first of January 1700, ushering in a century of spectacular music.

In moving to London, Handel joined a thriving music scene; here is a snapshot of the folkier side of the musical culture established in Britain. A generation before, in the time of Purcell, Playford published collections of folk tunes, exemplified in this set of ‘divisions’ or variations over a ground bass.
